‘Not Relevant’ is a protest tool designed to challenge the Conservative Governments decision in 2017 to no longer consider psychological distress as ‘relevant’ in relation to the mobility portion of Personal Independence Payment. At the time, this decision would see 163,000 d/Deaf and Disabled people go without fundamental financial support, and leave many of them unable to leave their homes.
Created in solidarity with Disabled People Against Cuts, this piece collated audio recordings from a group of disabled people from all over the country who were protesting from home. Once unfurled into a space and walked across, this large-scale portable e-textile would utilise pressure sensors in order to play their recordings via a nearby backpack speaker. Utilising the act of movement in order to challenge the harsh and unwarranted cuts to mobility benefits.
